A march for unions and higher wages ahead of Labor Day

Hours before Pittsburgh’s annual Labor Day parade, workers at the Oakland McDonald’s walked out Monday to join a constellation of leftist and labor groups to call for a $15 per hour wage and unionization for fast-food workers, hospital employees and university employees.

The event — organized by Service Employees International Union, Fight for $15, Pittsburgh UNITED, the Pittsburgh chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, and the Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN), among others — saw a couple hundred activists march to the Cathedral of Learning and UPMC Presbyterian before being bused to Freedom Corner in the Hill District for a rally.

Many marchers emphasized that the union drives were as important to them as the fight to raise the minimum wage from the state’s $7.25.
