Activists seek to sway city budget process

“Pittsburgh City Council on Monday took the first of three required sets of votes on some $720 million in proposed 2020 spending, but not before activists challenged the process and officials rose to its defense.

The $608 million operating budget and $110 million capital budget don’t include tax increases (a voter-approved parks tax has not yet been added) nor significant cuts to popular services. Nonetheless, in an atmosphere of increasing concern with economic equity, the budget drew around 50 activists to a press conference and some 100 people to a public hearing.”
