Pittsburgh Public Schools adopts community schools model: huge step towards equity

At PIIN, we believe that every child deserves an inclusive, high-quality education at schools that are equitable and well-resourced.Every child comes to school with different assets and barriers, but all children should have the same opportunity to succeed. The recent passage of a community schools policy for Pittsburgh Public Schools is a huge step in the right direction for our children and our communities. Every child comes to school with different assets and barriers, but all children should have the same opportunity to succeed.

In this model, the school becomes the center of the community; a hub for social-service programs that can assist students with medical care, food insecurity, family relations and stress, as well as neighborhood issues, such as housing and safety. The school is open to everyone—all day, every day.

An active member of the Great Public Schools coalition, PIIN knows that community schools are instrumental in helping every child receive the tools and supports they need to grow and thrive.

PIIN looks forward to continuing our good work with Dr. Anthony Hamlet and the Board of Education to implement a successful community schools model for the entire city of Pittsburgh.
