A half-century after the civil rights movement, Andrew Young admits that he and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t know how they would accomplish the massive feats they ultimately did.

“We didn’t know what we were doing,” said Mr. Young, a civil rights leader who was a close confidant of Rev. King’s. “With 50 people and almost no money, we were crazy enough to be able to change the world.”

Mr. Young, who spoke at the Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network’s annual banquet Sunday night, said Rev. King had a clear vision that was reinforced by his commitment to his faith, something he believes is lacking in American life.

“Regardless of what’s going on, there’s a spiritual force in the universe that needs to be renewed to pull us together and give us a sense of vision for the future,” he said. “Where there’s no vision, the people perish. And right now, we have no vision.”
